Black Manhattan Cocktail: A Bold Twist on a Classic

Looking for a sophisticated cocktail that blends classic charm with modern depth? Meet the Black Manhattan — a moody, elegant variation of the original that swaps sweet vermouth for a richer, more complex amaro.

What Is a Black Manhattan?

Manhattan VS Black Manhattan

The Black Manhattan is a contemporary riff on the iconic Manhattan cocktail, first created in the early 2000s by bartender Todd Smith at San Francisco’s Bourbon & Branch. It swaps out sweet vermouth for Averna, a Sicilian amaro, bringing a deeper, darker flavor profile to the timeless bourbon classic. This variation is bolder, earthier, and more aromatic — perfect for those who like their drinks strong but nuanced.

Black Manhattan Flavor Profile

Body: Full, smooth, spirit-forward

Sweetness: Low to medium (less sweet than a classic Manhattan)

Bitterness: Medium, with herbal, cocoa, and coffee notes

Finish: Lingering with bittersweet complexity

Ingredients for a Black Manhattan

●2 oz Rye or Bourbon – Rye adds spice, bourbon adds richness

●1 oz Averna Amaro – A bittersweet Sicilian liqueur with notes of cola, herbs, and dark chocolate

●2 dashes Angostura bitters – Traditional aromatic bitters

●2 dashes orange bitters – Adds citrus brightness

●Garnish: Brandied cherry or orange twist

How to Make a Black Manhattan

1.Add all ingredients into a mixing glass with ice.

2.Stir until well chilled (about 30 seconds).

3.Strain into a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass.

4.Garnish with a brandied cherry or orange peel.

Why Use Averna?

Averna is a Sicilian amaro with a smooth, dark profile — think cola, burnt orange, caramel, and herbs. It gives the Black Manhattan:

●A deeper, bittersweet richness

●Lower sugar content than vermouth

●Silky texture and balanced complexity

Variations to Try

●Black Boulevardier: Replace whiskey with rye and use Averna in a Boulevardier format.

●Cold Brew Black Manhattan: Add a 0.5 oz shot of cold brew concentrate for an espresso-toned nightcap.

●Try Other Amari: Swap Averna with Cynar (for artichoke bitterness) or Montenegro (lighter and floral).

When to Serve

The Black Manhattan is ideal for:

●After-dinner sipping

●Sophisticated cocktail parties

●Fall and winter evenings

●Bourbon or rye lovers looking for something bittersweet
